Luxottica Suffers Major Ransomware Attack

Hackers hit Luxottica with a ransomware attack, leading to problems for the eyewear giant worldwide.

The Italy-based eyewear giant, Luxottica – which boasts brands such as Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Persol in its portfolio as well as produces eyeglasses for fashion labels such as Burberry, Prada, Chanel, and Versace – appears to have been affected. There seems to have experienced a ransomware attack.

Details of the alleged attack are not immediately clear, but according to BleepingComputer, customers began reporting that the company’s Ray-Ban, Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, EyeMed, and Pearle Vision websites were down. The attack led to the shutdown of its temporary operations in Italy and China.

The site also quoted Italian security specialist Nicola Vanin, who confirmed the incident, but gave assurances that no data was stolen or leaked. “Once the event was analyzed, the clues were collected in less than 24 hours, and the procedure for cleaning up the affected servers began,” Vanin said. “Work activities are progressively returning to normal in the Milano plants and headquarters.”

Some of the company’s locations in Italy reportedly experienced “computer system failure” and employees were asked to stay home, according to Insurance Business.
