Our hands are one of the most powerful tools of expression – they become the eyes for the blind, the mouthpiece for the mute, a mode of communication for the deaf, and also for many of us in times of need.

Just like fingerprints, handprints are also unique for every human being. Little children of L V Prasad Eye Institute with retinoblastoma set out to perform a unique and noble task of spreading a strong message of hope and survival by beautifully showcasing their handprints. They created the ‘Wall of Hope’ on the third floor of Velamati Soubhagyavathamma Patient Care Building of L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad with the message “We have survived Cancer”. This message has been created with a collage of pictures of hundreds of children who received treatment at The Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer at LVPEI. The colorful handprints of little children, who have survived cancer, adorn this Wall of Hope.

Wall-of-Hope2This ‘Wall of Hope’ is a celebration for those who have survived retinoblastoma, an inspiration for those tiny little ones who are undergoing treatment for retinoblastoma, a modality of support for those families who undergo hardships during the course of treatment of their children, and a strong and meaningful outreach to the community.

“National Cancer Survivors Day is marked in June, and it was only apt that we celebrated the 29th annual National Cancer Survivors Day this year, by raising awareness about cancer survivorship, specifically retinoblastoma, which is the most common intraocular cancer in children,” said Dr Swathi Kaliki, Head – The Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer, L V Prasad Eye Institute.
