The Future Of Optics: Trends, Tech And Style Redefined

VisionPlus Magazine engaged with top opticians and exhibitors at Optika Mumbai to explore the future of the optical industry

Together, industry professionals, opticians and brands from across India created a vibrant platform for discussions on the future of eyewear. VisionPlus Magazine seized the opportunity to engage directly with visitors and exhibitors, gaining valuable insights on shifting customer preferences, the rise of technology and the new emerging trends in the optical landscape.

    Changing Customer Preferences in Eyewear
Opticians shared how customer expectations have evolved in recent years. Beyond just vision correction, eyewear is now seen as a style statement.

“People are more fashion-conscious now and often come in asking for trendy frames that match their personalities,” shared one optician. Customers are also increasingly seeking lightweight, comfortable frames and lenses with advanced coatings for digital protection. The past six months have also seen rising demand for premium eyewear and prescription sunglasses. “Earlier, customers would prioritise price, but now quality and style are gaining importance,” said a Mumbai-based exhibitor.

One of the standout displays at the event was the vibrant collection of kids' eyewear. An exhibitor showcased a playful range of frames in bright, eye-catching colours, featuring durable materials.

“Children love bold colours and unique shapes, and we ensure our collections reflect that excitement,” shared an exhibitor. The emphasis on kid-friendly eyewear highlights the growing demand for fun and protective options tailored for young wearers.

Trends and Innovation in Eyewear Technology
Exhibitors emphasised how AI is set to play a bigger role in the industry.

Innovation is accelerating, from AI-driven lenses that adapt to changing light conditions to smart eyewear with built-in connectivity. “The future of eyewear is about blending fashion, functionality and technology,” said an exhibitor.

Opticians also acknowledged the growing demand for lenses with digital eye strain protection and adaptive tints. “Customers want eyewear that works for every scenario, whether indoors or outdoors,” shared an exhibitor.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual try-ons are also becoming game-changers, allowing customers to experience frame designs virtually before making a purchase.

A notable highlight from the exhibitors was the showcase of smart eyewear with built-in audio capabilities, allowing users to listen to music without the need for external earbuds. “This is the future of wearable tech,” said an exhibitor, emphasising the convenience and seamless integration of audio features into stylish eyewear.

The Intersection of Fashion and Function
Beyond technology, the fusion of style and function continues to be a key trend. Exhibitors showcased collections that balanced cutting-edge lens technology with bold, fashion-forward designs. “Eyewear has become a fashion accessory—it’s as important as shoes or a handbag now,” said a Mumbai visitor.

As eyewear evolves, opticians are finding new ways to engage customers by offering personalised styling consultations and showcasing curated collections. This shift underscores the growing importance of eyewear as an essential part of personal expression.

With eyewear now positioned at the intersection of style and technology, the next few years promise to be transformative. The optical industry is poised for rapid evolution, redefining not just how people see but how they express themselves through eyewear.
