YUICHI TOYAMA: The Art Of The Unexpected

YUICHI TOYAMA: The Art Of The Unexpected

Japanese craftsmanship meets bold design, creating refined eyewear with individuality

YUICHI TOYAMA. makes a quieter kind of statement. Its frames do not depend on excess to make an impression. Their character emerges through the tension between line and volume, the meeting of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary form, and details that reveal themselves with time.

Behind the name is Yuichi Toyama, a designer shaped by a deep understanding of eyewear and an instinct to question what came before. His approach draws on a distinctly Japanese appreciation of proportion, precision and simplicity, while leaving room for contrast and experimentation.

The result is eyewear that feels familiar, yet never quite expected. Simple, but never ordinary. That balance has become the signature of YUICHI TOYAMA.

Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow

Japan has a long history of turning everyday objects into expressions of refinement. For Yuichi Toyama, that relationship with craftsmanship is an important part of his approach to eyewear. His work draws from the history of the frame while looking towards its future, bringing established skills together with contemporary design. The philosophy is not about preserving tradition.

It is about knowing when to respect it—and when to move beyond it. Classical references are stripped back and reconstructed. Familiar shapes are given new proportions. Structural elements become part of the visual language rather than being hidden away.

The frames have an almost architectural quality, but there is warmth within that structure. Every element appears to have a reason for being there.

This is where the brand’s idea of ‘new made-in-Japan’ quality comes into focus: a meeting point between traditional craft and contemporary design.

Five Steps to Something New

At the heart of Yuichi Toyama’s creative process are five words: Look. Think. Draw. Make. Break. They describe a process that begins with observation and ends with questioning the answer. It starts with looking. Toyama observes eyewear, people, proportions and materials. Looking becomes a way of understanding. Then comes thinking: asking what has already been done and considering how a familiar idea might be approached differently.

Drawing gives those thoughts form. Making brings them into the physical world. And then comes breaking.

To break is to challenge the solution that has already been found. It means asking whether a frame can be lighter, cleaner, more unexpected or more expressive. It is a refusal to become too comfortable with the first answer.

The Beauty of Structure

There is an elegance in the way YUICHI TOYAMA treats construction. Rather than hiding the mechanics of a frame, the brand often allows structure to become part of its identity. Lines intersect. Shapes overlap. Bridges and temples create visual rhythm. Colours are used with restraint, while contrasts can make a seemingly simple frame reveal another dimension. A classic silhouette might carry an unexpected detail, revealing a more intricate story beneath its simplicity.

This attention to construction gives the eyewear a distinctive presence without making it theatrical. It is individuality expressed through proportion rather than decoration.

Re-Born

The evolution of YUICHI TOYAMA is closely tied to the designer’s own journey.

In Spring 2017, the brand formerly known as USH by Yuichi Toyama was renamed YUICHI TOYAMA. The change marked a moment of renewal after 25 years of Yuichi Toyama’s journey as an eyewear designer.

‘Re-Born’ became an appropriate description. The new chapter carried the past forward while giving the design language greater freedom to evolve.  Toyama’s understanding of eyewear history remains visible in his collections, particularly in his interpretation of traditional aesthetics, structural forms and colour.

Designed for the Person

For all its focus on structure and craftsmanship, YUICHI TOYAMA ultimately begins with the wearer. The brand’s concept is deliberately neutral: pure design, structural aesthetics and individuality without dependence on trends.

Trends tell us what is happening now. Good design gives us something we can live with. YUICHI TOYAMA frames are created with that longevity in mind. Their restraint allows them to adapt to different faces, personalities and wardrobes, while their distinctive construction gives them an identity of their own. The frame becomes a quiet collaborator, allowing personality to come through. It is something to be worn, lived in and experienced. That everyday relationship is central to the brand’s idea of eyewear as an object of simple elegance and
timeless beauty.

Yuichi Toyama’s greatest contribution may therefore be less about creating a recognisable signature shape and more about establishing a way of thinking.
