The discussion:

The discussion forum, to commemorate Diabetic Eye Disease Month, will deal with the current prevalence scenario and severity of Diabetic Retinopathy in India. Panelists will talk about this leading cause of blindness and the role eye health professionals’ will play to address this issue, the level of attention, awareness, human capital, approaches required and the need for integration to reduce the burden of DR in the country.

Panelists

Dr G V S Murthy is the Director of Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad and Professor of Public Health Eye Care and Disability at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His work revolves around improving global health and fostering international partnerships to improve the health status of populations. His areas of expertise include Non-Communicable Diseases(NCDs) and Injuries, Disability, Eye Health, Community Health and Research Methods. Dr Murthy is a Technical Advisory Committee member for Diabetic Retinopathy with IAPB among several others. He has nearly 300 publications which are indexed in Pubmed and he serves on the editorial board for Community Eye Health, Journal of Social Health & Diabetes,etc.

Dr Padmaja Kumari Rani, Network Head, Tele-Ophthalmology and Consultant – Smt. Kanuri Santamma Retina Vitreous Service, LVPEI, is an expert in the management of Diabetic Retinopathy with sixteen years of professional experience after completing the National board-certified fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal diseases. She is currently actively involved in capacity building of Optometrists in Diabetic Retinopathy project in collaboration with the Optometry Council of India and Carl-Zeiss. She has trained over 1000 optometrists and 100 physicians in the screening and referral guidelines of DR across the nation.

Md Alamgir, Founder & Optometrist, Khushi Eye Care, is an experienced researcher with a demonstrated history of working in the computer software industry and much skilled in Diabetic Retinopathy evaluation. His other interest areas include clinical research, retinal pathology evaluation and diagnostics, medical education, medical devices, pediatrics, and contact lenses.
