Indian Vision Institute invites you for a panel discussion on ‘Age-Related Macular Degeneration – Sight Threat to Elderly’, to observe ARMD Awareness Month.

ARMD is a progressive central retinal disorder and the third largest cause of vision loss. Worldwide, approximately 8.1 million people have lost vision due to ARMD. However, with appropriate Low Vision rehabilitation, it is possible to use their remaining vision for daily living activities.

Through this discussion, we are aiming to cover the following aspects:

1. What are the early and advanced signs of ARMD?
2. Co-management of ARMD – Role of Ophthalmologists and Optometrists
3. Rehabilitation services for ARMD patients

Dr Beula Christy
Associate Director, Head of Services – Institute for Vision Rehabilitation
L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad

Dr Beula Christy completed her graduation and post-graduation in rehabilitation science from the Holy Cross College, Bharathidasan University, and a P.hD in vision science from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney. Dr Christy has presented widely in various national and international conferences and has several publications to her credit. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Sr. Elizabeth Rose Best Rehabilitation Worker award in 1999 and Project Management India (PMI) in 2016 for excellence in community work. She is the assistant editor of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology for Low Vision and Rehabilitation. Dr Christy heads the Institute for Vision Rehabilitation at LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad that focuses on providing low vision and rehabilitation care across the LVPEIs network through centre-based and community-based approaches. She has 27 years of rich experience in rehabilitating people with visual impairment across all age groups and categories with a focus on early intervention of children with vision impairment and multiple disabilities

Ms. Sarika Gopalakrishnan
Senior Optometrist
Head – Low Vision Care Clinic
Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai

Ms Sarika Gopalakrishnan graduated with B.S Optometry from Elite School of Optometry, Chennai in collaboration with BITS, Pilani with distinction in the year 2008. She is currently an optometrist in Sankara Nethralaya and heads the low vision care clinic since 2009. She was awarded ‘Best Outstanding Optometrist’ for the year 2009-2010. She has initiated comprehensive rehabilitation services and multidisciplinary management of patients with visual impairment in Sankara Nethralaya. She has organized multiple CME programs and workshops on ‘Low Vision Care’ all over India. She has trained optometrists from different parts of the world to initiate and practice low vision care. She has received the “Knight of the Blind” award on Helen Keller Remembrance day in June 2011 from Lion’s Club International. She has been trained in evaluating the Functional Vision Assessment and she selects the Indian Blind Cricket team for the World cup according to the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) criteria. She was honoured as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry’ at the AAO meeting 2014, held in Denver, USA. She is the first Indian to complete a clinical candidacy fellowship in the field of Low Vision. She was instrumental in bringing changes to the lives of underprivileged students with visual impairment in the state of Tamil Nadu to provide them with portable video magnifier free of cost. She is currently pursuing her PhD and has multiple national and international peer-reviewed publications in the field of low vision.

Dr Manisha Agarwal
Head of Vitreoretinal Services and Clinical Research at Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital.

She has done her vitreoretinal fellowship and a clinical research fellowship from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. She was given the Indian Society for Prevention of blindness endowment award for being the best Vitreoretina fellow. She has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and she is currently the joint secretary of VRSI and secretary of US(I)

Ms Soniya Srivastava
Sr. Faculty Optometrist
Incharge – Vision Enhancement Center (VEC) & Clinical training

Ms Soniya Srivastava has experience of 22 years in the field of optometry, and is working as Senior Faculty – Optometrist, In-charge of the Vision Enhancement Center (Low Vision Clinic ) and Optometry Training with ‘Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital’ since 1999.
She has completed her Graduation and Fellowship in Optometry from L V Prasad Eye Institute and has received the “Best Fellow Award” for the year 1999.
She has a special interest in the field of Low Vision, has been trained and participated in various National & International workshops.
She has led the National Low Vision Programme under Sightsavers from 2012 to 2014 where the objective was to establish & strengthen 21 Low Vision Clinics in eye hospitals in different cities that don’t have services across the country.
