India Vision Institute in association with VisionPlus Magazine is organising a panel discussion on ‘Protect Your Eyes from Injury’.

About the panel discussion

Globally, world health organisation estimates the annual incidence of eye injuries at around 55 million that results in 1.6 million blind, 2.3 million bilateral low vision and 19 million unilateral blind or low vision patients. In India, the prevalence of eye injury varies from 2.4% to 10.6%. This discussion aims to cover the common types of eye injuries and their impact on vision, occupational hazards for eye injuries, preventive measures to avoid eye injuries at home, safety measures to avoid firecracker injuries, awareness about eye injuries and their consequences.

Prof Rupesh Agarwal

Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Deputy Head, Research
National Healthcare Group Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore

Dr Rupesh Agrawal is a senior consultant ophthalmologist and deputy head of research at National Healthcare Group Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. He is also an associate professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University and Duke NUS Medical School, Singapore and an honorary consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, London. Presently, he is the secretary of International Society of Ocular trauma and Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society. He was conferred with Healthcare Humanity Award by the President of the Republic of Singapore in 2011 for his humanitarian and pro-bono projects in remote areas of the world. He was recently awarded President Voluntarism Philanthropy Award by the president of Singapore for his charity work in Asia.

 

Dr Srikanth Ramasubramanian

Dr Srikanth Ramasubramanian is currently working as a senior consultant in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus department at Apollo Children’s Hospital. He had worked as a consultant at Sankara Nethralaya for 6 years and then worked as an international consultant with CMER Eye Hospital (Hong Kong and Shenzhen) for 3 years. Dr. Srikanth was awarded the prestigious Fellow of All India Collegium of Ophthalmology degree in pediatric Ophthalmology by the All India Ophthalmological Society in 2013. He was awarded the T L K Row Award by the Medical Research Foundation for the Best Associate Consultant in Ophthalmology for the year 2013-14 at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. Dr Srikanth has been actively involved in teaching and was a part of the All India Ophthalmological Society Teachers in Ophthalmology Program held in 2014-15 and was awarded the Resource Teacher award for the same. Dr. Srikanth has contributed to a number of textbook chapters on pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.

Ms Annette Hoskin

Annette is passionate about reducing avoidable vision loss from ocular trauma. She combines in-depth understanding of the incidence and epidemiology of ocular trauma with knowledge of eye protection design to help develop effective eye injury prevention strategies. Annette is currently undertaking her PhD in Ocular Trauma. She is a Research Fellow at the Save Sight Institute, University of Sydney and the Lions Eye Institute, University of Western Australia in Perth. Also, Annette works as the Global Standardisation Manager for Essilor and represents Australia in (ISO) International Standardization Organization committees relating to eye protection, sunglasses and spectacles.

 

Prof Dr S Natarajan

Prof. Dr. S. Natarajan, Padmashree Awardee, is an ophthalmologist who has performed over 60,000 Vitreous & Retinal surgeries over past 36 years and trained more than 68 vitreo-retinal surgeons across the globe. Dr Natarajan is the chairman and managing director of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital. He holds the Guinness World Record for the maximum number screening of Diabetic Retinopathy cases in an urban slum. He is the president of Asia-Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society, and the past president for Ocular Trauma Society of India. Government of Jammu and Kashmir has declared State Award to Dr S. Natarajan for his meritorious public service towards the ocular trauma victims in Kashmir. He is invited to teach and as well as speak in prestigious universities across the globe and his work has been published in international journals.
