IVI – VisionPlus Panel Discussion on
Virtual and Augmented Reality in Low Vision Rehabilitation

On 28th February, to commemorate Low Vision Awareness Month, India Vision Institute in association with VisionPlus is organizing a panel discussion on ‘Virtual and Augmented Reality in Low Vision Rehabilitation’.

Through this discussion, we will be discussing:

  1. How Virtual Reality (VR) & Augmented Reality (AR) enabled devices are used in Low Vision Rehabilitation (LVR) and the evolution of this advancement
  2. Patient experiences of using LVR that will help understand and encourage practitioners to start using it in their practice
  3. Challenges involved in using VR & AR enabled devices as a LVR tool
  4. Ongoing research work in this area.

Dr Ramesh.S.Ve began his career as an optometrist & clinical researcher in 2001 and has academic, clinical and research experience in the field of optometry, vision science and eye care. He is currently Professor, Department of Optometry, Manipal College of Health Professions, Manipal Academy of Higher Education. He completed his Doctorate (PhD) in 2014 Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. He is currently listed among the top 200 optometry & vision science researchers globally and is one of the two researchers listed from India. He also has a keen interest towards techno-entrepreneurship and actively supports, is the founding director of VISINT Healthcare Pvt Ltd, incubated at Manipal Universal Technology and Business Incubator and recipient of Biotechnology Ignition Grant. They are engaged in innovative technology & solution in tele and Home eye care. In addition to indigenous technology solutions, they have collaboration with international partners towards Self refraction, home glaucoma care and Virtual Reality Based Smart Tele Eye Care technology and launching the novel Virtual Reality based technology in Indian market. Innovations from his research has won the Gold Medal for best innovation at the DST-Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme-2013 and he is also a nominated mentor for the DST Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Program.


Sarika Gopalakrishnan

Sankara Nethralaya

Sarika Gopalakrishnan graduated with a Bachelors in Optometry from Elite School of Optometry, Chennai in collaboration with BITS, Pilani with distinction performance in the year 2008. She is a senior optometrist in Sankara Nethralaya and heads the low vision care clinic for past 12 years. She was awarded ‘Best Outstanding Optometrist’ for the year 2009-2010. She has initiated comprehensive rehabilitation services and multidisciplinary management of patients with visual impairment in Sankara Nethralaya. She is a senior faculty in Elite School of Optometry and she lectures on low vision care and geriatric optometry for undergraduate and postgraduate students. She has received ‘Knight of the Blind’ award on Helen Keller Remembrance day in June 2011 from Lion’s Club International. She has been trained in evaluating the Functional vision assessment and she selects the Indian Blind Cricket team for World cup according to the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) criteria. She was honored as a ‘Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry’ at the AAO meeting 2014, held at Denver, USA. She is the first Indian woman to complete clinical candidacy fellowship in the field of Low Vision. She was instrumental in bringing changes to the lives of underprivileged students with visual impairment in the state of Tamil Nadu to provide them Portable video magnifier at free of cost. She is currently pursuing her PhD and is also a facilitator of World Health Organization (WHO) document on Low vision rehabilitation chapter. She is elected as a core member of Special Interest Group of Low vision care services (SIG_LVC) by Optometry Council of India.
