EssilorLuxottica Expands In Japan With New Investments

From acquiring a key Fukui eyewear plant to launching the Japan-made Nami brand and expanding retail through Washin, EssilorLuxottica reinforces its commitment to Japanese craftsmanship and optician partnerships.

As Japan hosts Expo 2025 in Osaka, EssilorLuxottica marks 35 years of operations in the country with strategic moves that deepen its local footprint and product innovation. The company now fully owns the Fukui Megane factory — a leading titanium and acetate eyewear producer in Japan’s renowned eyewear hub — after a collaboration that began in 2010.

The renovated plant blends traditional Japanese craftsmanship with innovation and now employs over 300 artisans. This has enabled a two-way exchange between Fukui and the group’s Italian facilities, bringing together heritage, technique, and forward-thinking design.

In retail, the acquisition of the 70-store Washin chain has bolstered the company’s direct-to-consumer presence. EssilorLuxottica also continues to develop Japan-exclusive and globally marketed eyewear under premium brands like Oliver Peoples, Prada, and Giorgio Armani — all crafted in Japan.

For opticians, this means access to exceptional frames backed by a renewed focus on precision, quality, and cultural authenticity. As Francesco Arcuri, General Manager for Japan, puts it: “Fukui is where Japanese mastery meets global design sophistication.”
