Hoya Vision Care, a leader in optical technology innovation, participated in the 41st European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Congress that took place on 8–12 September 2023 in Vienna, Austria. This year’s Congress agenda offered a wealth of sessions including main symposia, instructional courses, a full suite of wet lab courses, video sessions, posters, and oral presentations.
HOYA Vision Care along with HOYA Surgical Optics collaborated to address myopia with a shared corporate booth as well as hosting a symposium where Professor Haken Kaymak, ophthalmologist and head eye surgeon at the Breyer, Kaymak & Klabe Augenchirurgie in Dusseldorf, Germany presented the ‘Therapeutic Power of Multifocality in Myopic Children’. During the presentation, he shed light on the epidemiology, emphasizing the high prevalence of myopia. He delved into the risk factors of myopia and discussed the options for myopia management and evidence behind a combination treatment with MiYOSMART spectacle lenses and atropine eye drops – a management choice that is increasingly gaining more interest and research in the myopia treatment space.
HOYA Vision Care was also involved in the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS) Sub-specialty day, where HOYA’s Global Head of Medical and Scientific Affairs, Dr. Natalia Vlasak, moderated a symposium titled “Myopia Management with MiYOSMART – New evidence and experiences from Europe”. During this symposium, Dominique Bremond-Gignac, Professor and Head of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Necker-Enfants Malades and Paris University, presented new insights on myopia management in pediatric ophthalmology, with particular attention being brought to the new WSPOS 2023 myopia consensus statement.
The presentation was followed by a talk from Professor Kaymak, who shared insights gained from a real-world one-year study in Germany. Due to the lack of recognized guidance on treatment goals in myopia management, he also provided his recommendation on when to start treatment and a new way to evaluate the treatment’s success in the short term.
