The Hong Kong Optical Fair organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) between 7th to 9th November, 2012 saw the participation of over 629 exhibitors from 22 countries and 12,800 buyers. Three new zones – Diagnostic Instruments, Eyewear Accessories, and Sporting and Professional Eyewear – showcased new products in those sectors.

Nearly 70 buying missions were organised to help eyewear manufacturers tap potential customers. “In the face of challenging market conditions, manufacturers need to have effective promotional channels, while buyers should adapt to market trends and address the needs of consumers,” said Benjamin Chau, HKTDC’s Deputy Executive Director. “As Hong Kong provides world-class exhibition and trade services, we are confident that our trade fair will remain the top choice for suppliers and buyers.”

The Brand Name Gallery showcased 166 brands from 20 countries and regions. Winning entries of the 14th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition were on display during the fair. Under the theme ‘Timeless’, the competition organised by HKTDC and the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association, saw more than 200 entries. 11 prizes were awarded to nine local designers.

Focus on Electronic Eyewear

The 10th Hong Kong Optometric Conference took place under the theme ‘New Frontiers in Ophthalmic Dispensing’. The latest trends and technology in prescription eyewear were discussed, with featured

speakers from Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and
Hong Kong. They included US-based Dr Richard Clompus, Vice President, Global Professional Affairs, PixelOptics, who introduced the company’s electronic eyewear.

Several seminars covered a wide variety of topics, including the retail outlook in optical products and European fashion eyewear. Experts from Italy and France gave sessions, and market research company GfK Italy spotlighted the latest trends in eyewear and fashion design.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Taiwan Spectacles Industry Association hosted a party at the fairground where it also launched new products by four Taiwan exhibitors. Industry officials, VIP buyers and international media were also seen enjoying the networking cocktail reception to mark the 20th staging of the fair. The relaxing atmosphere and good entertainment in the form of a musical performance was a great way to make new acquaintances and renew old friendships at the Hong Kong Optical Fair.
